On Sunday afternoon, many homes, businesses, the Oakland International Airport and parts of the Bay Area lost power due to a major outage. Power was restored at the international airport in Oakland after almost two hours. Flights were delayed but none were canceled. However, some residents and businesses remained without power overnight. A major fire in a transformer in a Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) yard was reportedly the reason for the power outage.

The crew noticed gray and brown smoke emanating from a yard at the PG&E substation. Firefighters were called at about 1 p.m. They said that they saw a transformer burning in the yard. They extinguished the fire by 2.30 p.m. Power outages were seen in Oakland and Alameda. The only way that Alameda could be accessed was by the Posey and Webster tubes, past noon.
Alameda Municipal Power posted on social media that power was restored to the island by about 5.30 p.m. They also confirmed that a PG&E transmission line had an issue that caused the power disruption.
A spokesman for Oakland International Airport said that they lost power for almost two hours. Power was restored at approximately 2.50 p.m. The airport serves about 170 flights a day, none of which were canceled but some of them were delayed. The BART Oakland airport connector train service was also disrupted, and shuttles were used during the disruption.

There were a few lines open for screening of passengers at Oakland International Airport. Large crowds of people were seen in the baggage claim areas, in photos posted on social media.
According to PG&E, during the height of the outage 54,000 customers lost power in both Oakland and Alameda. At 10 p.m., most of the customers regained power. However, the utility had warned that about 8,500 customers might have to remain in the dark overnight.
