Will Vigilante Who Killed Robber In Houston Restaurant, Returned Customers’ Money, Be Charged for Murder?

Footage of a customer at a Houston restaurant pulling out a gun and shooting dead a would-be robber was posted online (Twitter / Gage) and Houston Police Department

Police in Texas are looking for a vigilante diner who shot dead a suspected robber with fake a gun in a Houston taqueria, then assisted diners in recovering the money before fleeing. Surveillance video shows the man drawing a weapon and shooting the robbery suspect multiple times, including in the back and head, inside the Ranchito #4 Taqueria in south-west Houston. Police later discovered the robber’s weapon to be a “plastic gun,” either an air-soft or BB gun.

According to Houston police, no charges have been filed against the man, who is described as white or Hispanic. They want to talk to him about “his role in the shooting,” according to a press release. Lt R Willkens of the Houston police said that the suspect was in his 20s and was wearing a black ski mask and black gloves when he entered the Mexican restaurant, pointed a fake weapon at customers, and demanded their wallets and money.

The vigilante diner was seen reaching for something and then drawing his weapon as the suspect walked by on his way out. According to Houston police, the man, who was described as driving a “1970s or 1980s model pickup truck,” fired at least nine shots. He then collected and returned the stolen money to diners before fleeing before the cops arrived. The owner of the taqueria, Lopez, said he and his employees are still in shock.

Texas’s stand-your-ground laws allow people to defend themselves if they believe their lives are in danger, though the line between self-defense and excessive force can be blurred. Thomas Nixon, a former Houston police officer who is now a lawyer, said that the customer was within his jurisdiction.

According to witnesses, a man wearing a ski mask and gloves entered the restaurant and began pointing what appeared to be a gun at customers while demanding money. The man was later identified as 30-year-old Eric Eugene Washington.

Then, according to police, one of the customers pulled out his gun and shot Washington multiple times. Before leaving the scene, the customer collected the stolen money from Washington’s body and returned it to the other customers. A grand jury will decide whether a customer at a Houston taqueria will face charges for fatally shooting a man who pointed a real gun at customers and took their money last week, a shooting that several legal experts said appeared justified.

In Texas, anyone over the age of 21 may carry a handgun in public without a license, background check, or training. Over 30 states in the United States, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, allow people to openly carry a handgun without a license or permit.
