Earlier, Erdogan’s conservative Justice and Development Party, or AKP, won the national election and wanted to strengthen its position by winning the local elections.
The CHP won elections in several major cities, including Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Adana, Antalya, Bursa, Balikesir, and Adiyaman. The CHP was ahead in 36 of the 81 provinces and won in all the major cities in Turkey.
The 2018 economic crisis caused AKP to lose many major cities, as they faced its effects the most. The exact reason for the 2024 loss has been mentioned, as the nation faces high inflation, a weak currency, and depleting foreign exchange reserves.
Earlier, economic crises were confined to major cities, but now, the weak economy affects the entire country. The CHP has increased its vote share across Turkey, and not only in urban communities.
Ekrem Imamoglu, a 52-year-old former businessman, has been Istanbul’s mayor since 2019. He won his second stint after securing more than 50 percent of the vote and defeating the AKP candidate by nearly one million votes.
Mansur Yavas won Ankara with over 60 percent of the votes. His supporters began celebrating when over half the votes were in.
Erdogan became prominent in the national scene after he became the mayor of Istanbul in the 1990s. CWEB analysts think Imamoglu’s victory in Istanbul could make him a front-runner in the 2028 presidential elections in Turkey.
