WASHINGTON- Justice Department reports the Lockerbie bombing suspect from the 1988 Pan Am flight is in American custody.

Officials announced on Sunday that a main suspect in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people, the majority of them Americans, was in American prison.

Abu Agila Mohammad Masud Kheir Al-Marimi, the alleged mastermind behind Pan Am Flight 103’s bomb, has been taken into American custody, according to a spokesman for the Justice Department.

On accusations brought two years ago, federal prosecutors accused Masud of destroying an airplane that caused death and destroying a vehicle of interstate commerce with explosives. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in Washington.

Speculation that Mr. Masud would be turned over to American authorities to face justice began after it was revealed last month that he had been abducted by a militia group in Libya.

The suspect would make an initial appearance in a federal court in Washington, according to a representative for the US Justice Department, who spoke to the Reuters news agency.

He was incarcerated in Libya five years ago for building bombs. Fans are exited that the Lockerbie bombing suspect is in custody.

Pan Am Aircraft 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight that took off from Frankfurt and made stops in London and New York City en route to Detroit. Clipper Maid of the Seas, an aircraft operator, a Boeing 747-121 with the registration N739PA, flew the route’s transatlantic segment. In what became known as the Lockerbie bombing, an onboard bomb detonated shortly after 19:00 on December 21, 1988, while the plane was flying over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members.

In Lockerbie, large portions of the airplane landed in a street where people were living, killing 11 people. The 270 fatalities make it the deadliest terrorist aviation assault in United States history.
