Nevada keeps Cortez Masto giving Democrats control of Senate

The Associated Press has finally called the race for Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, on Saturday. This Democratic win in Nevada tallies the Senate seats won by the party to 50. With the additional seat of Vice President Kamal Harris, the Democrats have retained their majority in the Senate. Although Cortez Masto was trailing Republican contender Adam Laxalt, many had predicted that she would retain the seat. She pulled ahead after the mail-in ballots from the Las Vegas area in Clark County were counted, on Saturday night.

Both the candidates in the Nevada race had strong name recognition. The winner Catherine Cortez Masto is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants. She is also the daughter of a former influential commissioner in Clark County. She was elected to fill in Harry Reid’s seat after he retired. She had a small two-point margin lead.

Cortez Masto, who is the first Latina elected to the Senate, used her roots to win as 20 percent of the electorate has similar roots. She used ads to highlight Laxalt’s views of banning abortions at 13 weeks. She highlighted the fact that 14 members of his family who endorsed her. She also called him a 2020 election denier.

Adam Laxalt served as the Attorney General of Nevada. He lost the gubernatorial election in the state in 2018, by four points. He helped Trump in his campaign but Trump lost Nevada by two points. Laxalt denied the results of the 2020 election of President Joe Biden.

Adam Laxalt was endorsed by Donald Trump. He linked Cortez Masto to two issues that were of concern among voters: crime and inflation. Ironically violent crime in Nevada fell for the third consecutive year. His campaign was bankrolled by two of the richest members in the nation: Jeff Yass, an investor from Pennsylvania and Richard Uihlein, founder of Uline packaging products.

The Nevada race, although close, clinched the deal for the Democrats in the Senate and gave them the majority. There will be a runoff in December for the seat in Georgia where Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock will face former scandal ridden football legend Herschel Walker, who is endorsed by Donald Trump.
