Researchers identify maximum temperatures at which humans can survive. A new study released on Thursday claims that for certain people, the top threshold temperature for humans is 104 degrees Fahrenheit. How hot does the human body tolerate? The issue has been raised and considered numerous times, but according to one researcher, earlier study has neglected the part metabolism plays in keeping the human body warm in severe temperatures.

At a conference for the Society of Experimental Biology on Thursday, Lewis Halsey from the University of Roehampton in England revealed the results of his team’s ongoing research, explaining how humans have an “upper critical temperature” that most likely occurs between 104- and 122-degrees Fahrenheit.

Given that many parts of the world are currently experiencing record-breaking heat, Halsey thinks the findings could have an impact on working conditions, athletic competition, medical treatment, and international travel.

The upper critical temperature denotes the highest threshold of temperatures along the human metabolic “thermoneutral zone,” a range of temperatures in which a person’s resting metabolic rate is modest and the body is not required to maintain core body temperature.
