Turkey’s President Erdogan Sends Bill for Sweden’s Bid for NATO Admission to Turkish Parliament

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has submitted a bill for ratification by the Turkish Parliament, as Sweden had put in a bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after Russia invaded Ukraine. Turkey and Hungary were the two countries that were holding out. All 31 NATO allies must endorse Sweden’s membership before the country can join the alliance. The Monday submission of Sweden’s bid to the Turkish Parliament by Erdogan brings Sweden one step closer to joining the NATO alliance.

Erdogan had approved of Finland joining NATO in April, after an initial holdout but had objected to Sweden’s entry, citing multiple reasons. He said that the Swedish government had not done enough to crack down on Turkish separatists, dissidents, and more.

On Monday Erdogan signed the protocol, and a short statement was released by his office. The presidency posted the following statement on social media: “The Protocol on Sweden’s NATO Accession was signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on October 23, 2023, and referred to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.”

The Turkish Parliament must ratify the protocol, and the time that will be taken by the parliamentarians to ratify the process remains unknown. Erdogan’s Justice and Development party leads a ruling coalition that is in the majority in the Turkish Parliament.

NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said, “I look forward to a speedy vote to ratify and to welcoming Sweden as a full NATO ally very soon.”

He added, “As I told President Erdogan when we spoke on the weekend, this will make the whole alliance stronger and more secure.”

The Swedish Prime Minister’s office also posted on the same social media platform, “Welcome that President Erdogan signed Sweden’s ratification protocol to NATO and submitted it to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Parliamentary procedures will now commence. We are looking forward to becoming a member of NATO.”
