Two Republican Senators criticize McConnell and other GOP members for bipartisan support of omnibus package

On Sunday, two Republican senators slammed their leader Mitch McConnell and other senate colleagues for the bipartisan support they had given to the $1.7 trillion omnibus package that was passed by Congress and sent to the desk of President Joe Biden, on Friday.

Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other GOP senators helped the Senate to pass the huge spending bill, on Thursday. A total of 18 senators from the Republican Party voted in favor of the massive $1.7 trillion package, along with the Democrats. It was passed by the House, on Friday. This legislation is expected to provide funds for the federal government through September 2023.

Congresspersons across party lines favored the bill as it increased defense spending for 2023. The amount that has been locked in for defense spending in 2023 as per the bill is $858 billion. This is an increase of 9.7 percent, when compared with 2022. The bill also kept non defense spending increases at a rate below inflation.

Despite the bipartisan support, some Senate Republicans were unhappy that their party colleagues offered bipartisan support. Two of these senators: Ron Johnson from Wisconsin and Mike Lee from Utah denounced their leader Mitch McConnell and their GOP colleagues during an interview that was conducted, on Sunday by John Catsimatidis, a radio talk show host.

Appearing on “The Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770, Sen. Mike Lee said that the party leadership had turned on several including its Republic voters, its Republican base and most of its GOP senators. He called it the “final straw” and more.

The senator from Wisconsin also joined his colleague on the show comparing the vote with football. He said that the Republicans calling increased defense spending a win was “like a football team that just lost the game 60 to 0, and they kick a field goal in the waning seconds and say the field goal is a big win.”

Sen. Ron Johnson added that the Senate could have waited for the GOP House Leader McCarthy to take lead in the House early next year, instead of passing the bill at this point of time.
