An explosion took place in central Paris on Wednesday evening at about 5 p.m. Reports say that 24 people have been injured after the blast and four of them are critical. The explosion took place at a building which had a design school called the Paris American Academy that was established in 1965. The location of the blast is the fifth arrondissement in Paris near Jardin Du Luxembourg and the famous Sorbonne University. The area is popular with both students and tourists.

Witnesses said that there was a strong smell of gas before the explosion took place. Rubble was strewn across the street and a thick black plume of smoke rose up to the sky in the center of the capital city in France, as firefighters fought the blaze. Emergency workers are combing through the wreckage for people as there are at least two who are thought to be missing.

The headquarters of the Catholic education system in Rue Saint-Jacques suffered “minor damage”, according to a report in Le Monde and the people in the building were evacuated through the Val-de-Grâce hospital, to avoid another potential explosion.

Although the cause of the blast has not as yet been determined Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that video footage suggested that the explosion took place inside a building that was located next to the Val de Grâce church, according to the newspaper, Le Parisien.

Paris Police chief Laurent Nunez said that the building had been surrounded by fire that was later brought under control by firefighters. Over 200 firefighters and several emergency workers were deployed to contain the blaze.

Seven people are in an “emergency condition”, according to latest reports.

Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo remains at the scene, as of now. Florence Berthout, the mayor of the fifth arrondissement said that it was an “extremely violent” explosion and that glass pieces kept falling from buildings.

Interior minister Gérald Darmanin has asked people to avoid the area. However, residents were moving freely across the street later in the evening, after the blast was contained and the cordons were removed. Many students from the Latin Quarter said that they heard the blast as the area has a lot of students and tourists.
