Celebrity singer Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys has been accused of sexual battery by a woman who claims the incident happened more than 20 years ago when she was a teenager. A source close to the star has denied the allegation.
According to reports, the Backstreet Boys singer, 42, was sued by a woman named Shannon Ruth who claimed she was 17 years old fan when Carter, then 21, allegedly sexually assaulted her on his tour bus following a concert in 2001. The suit was initially reported on by TMZ and Rolling Stone. Carter’s close friend refutes the charges.
Ruth, who is autistic and has cerebral palsy, claimed that Carter approached her while she was in line for autographs following a Backstreet Boys concert in Tacoma, Washington. The documents reportedly state that the singer asked Ruth if she wanted a drink and that when she said she wanted apple juice, he gave her a red beverage he called “VIP juice.” Ruth thinks the beverage also contained alcohol even though Carter allegedly claimed it was cranberry juice.
According to the documents, Carter allegedly forced Ruth to have oral sex with him after bringing her to the bathroom. The singer allegedly continued to assault her sexually on a bed after that. Ruth asserted that she was a virgin prior to the encounter and later became infected with HPV.
Ruth asserts that she delayed reporting the alleged assault because the performer allegedly threatened to have her put in jail if she told anyone what had happened. She is suing for intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress as well as sexual battery. She is asking for both restitution and financial punishment.
Former teen pop singer Melissa Schuman, who claimed in 2017 that the incident occurred when she was 18 and he was 22, had previously accused Carter of rape. The performer refuted Schuman’s allegations, claiming that everything they did was “consensual,” and he was never put on trial for anything. In 2018, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office rejected the case, citing the statute of limitations’ expiration.
The Carter family has been going through a difficult time as they have both publicly and privately mourned the loss of Aaron Carter, a brother who passed away on November 5 at the age of 34. The celebrity has continued to tour with the Backstreet Boys. He and his wife Lauren have three young children together. In memory of their late sibling, Aaron recently established a donation fund for children’s mental health with the help of his twin sister Angel.
